To implement strategies under Goal 2 (Whole Student) of the Portland Promise, Portland Public Schools put together various programs under the umbrella of Youth Development with the explicit purpose of having a coordinated, deliberate, targeted and concerted effort to advance learning experiences for students and to facilitate their potential to become compassionate, and contributing citizens in their local and global communities.
Youth Development is an approach for working with our youth that recognizes their diverse strengths and abilities and to find connections and opportunities for students to nurture and advance domains of development - academic, civic, cognitive, social, emotional, physical, etc. and in the process become active agents in their own growth and development. Portland Public Schools has three Youth Development programs offered to its high school students: Extended Learning Opportunities, Make It Happen!, and Mentoring.
